Architectural Building Services is dedicated to the conservation of the environment and the idea of "sustainable design". We support the efforts of the USGBC’s LEED’s program and the "Green Building" movement providing assistance to architects, designers and general contractors specifying products for LEED’s projects.
In a continuing effort to be at the forefront of the industry, ABS became "FSC" Chain of Custody Certified (#SCS-OOC-00454) for wood products in 2002, enabling the company to provide products with LEED point’s potential before any other commercial door supplier in the Pacific Northwest. ABS was "green" prior to most manufacturers and continues to assist them in navigating the requirements of the USGBC. ABS is always available to assist clients navigating LEED rating requirements in an effort to gain the needed points for LEED certification in our category.
ABS has handled a broad spectrum of work for facilities such as:
- The American Honda Distribution and Training Facility in Gresham, completed for Opus Development in 2001, achieved a LEED Silver rating
- The Lewis and Clark College Social Sciences Building with Hoffman Construction, achieved a LEED Gold rating
- The Hillsdale Library, achieved a LEED Gold rating
- The Balfour-Guthrie Building which houses Thomas Hacker Architecs, with Gray Purcell Construction, achieved a LEED Silver rating
- The Lovejoy Building Renovation for Opsis Architects Studio which, also with Gray Purcell, achieved a LEED Gold rating
Architectural Building Services has been working with manufacturers and the Certified Forest Products Council to meet the demands of clients across the nation looking to be a part of the "Green Building" movement and comply with the USGBC certification system known as LEED.
The USGBC (United States Green Building Council, www.usgbc.org) is a coalition that "promotes buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work". The USGBC founded and oversees the LEEDs program.
LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) provides a scoring/rating system that allows an assessment of a building’s performance and ability in meeting sustainability goals. LEED emphasizes the use of new products and systems and enhances a building’s efficiency as well as products that are responsible to the environment. LEED Credit 7, Certified Wood, requires the use of FSC products.
FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council, www.fscus.org) is an organization that promotes responsible forestry practices world-wide. It is an international, non-profit association made up of members that include environmental and social groups as well as progressive forestry and wood retail companies working in partnership to improve forest management worldwide. Certification of forest land and the companies that process and manufacture wood harvested from that land is handled by independent third party companies such as SCS and Smartwood. This certification, known as "Chain of Custody," ensures consumers that they are indeed getting FSC certified products.
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) is a neutral, third-party testing and certification organization evaluating environmental and food claims. Through certification, SCS is recognizing businesses whose products and services meet the highest environmental and food standards. ABS is proud to have received FSC certification from SCS. FSC accredited certification means that the forest of origin has been independently inspected and evaluated according to environmental, social and economic principles and criteria agreed by the Forest Stewardship Council A.C. (FSC).
